Well, according to Armstrong, Pergo and other major manufacturers you can go right ahead and install on just about any old surface: vinyl sheet flooring, linoleum, wood floors, wood underlayment, particleboard, ceramic tiles and concrete.

Armstrong even maintains that you can install over carpet (if it’s no more than 1/4″ thick). Well, judging by the sorry state of the carpets currently in some parts of my house, I’ll definitely be ripping them out even if it means extra work! According to Pergo their laminate flooring is thin enough to fit right over the existing floor without your having to even change thresholds or doors. They also claim their flooring can be installed on floorheating.
